I'm so excited to be writing my first blog post for Rever Wellness. My goal and mission is to help women feel their best from the inside out. Let's talk about ALL the things and share our experiences. The first thing we NEED to talk about is our HORMONES.
As women, our bodies are beautifully complex, and our menstrual cycle is a natural process that reflects the interplay of hormones. Learning to understand and embrace our cycles isn't always easy BUT it can be empowering. If you master your cycle you can harness the ebb and flow of hormones to optimize your well-being. Today's post aims to explore the AMAZING world of women's hormonal cycles and how you can master them.
The Menstrual Cycle 101
The menstrual cycle, unfolds over roughly 28 days, although this can vary from woman to woman. It consists of four main phases: menstruation, the follicular phase, ovulation, and the luteal phase. Throughout these phases, key hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) rise and fall in a delicately orchestrated dance.
Menstruation marks the beginning of the cycle, characterized by the shedding of the uterine lining. As this phase comes to an end, the follicular phase begins, during which estrogen levels rise. This hormone plays a crucial role in preparing the body for ovulation by stimulating the growth of the uterine lining and the maturation of an egg within the ovary.
Ovulation, the midpoint of the cycle, occurs when a mature egg is released from the ovary, ready for potential fertilization. This process is triggered by a surge in luteinizing hormone, causing the mature follicle to rupture and release the egg. Following ovulation, the body enters the luteal phase, during which progesterone takes center stage. This hormone supports the thickening of the uterine lining in preparation for potential implantation of a fertilized egg. We will often test your hormone labs during this phase as many women have a progesterone deficiency or an excess of estrogen which leads to COMMON but not NORMAL pre menstrual symptoms like migraines, cramps, bloating, breast tenderness to name a few.
The hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle can have a profound impact on our physical and emotional well-being. Estrogen, for example, is known for its mood-enhancing effects and its role in promoting energy and vitality. As estrogen levels rise during the follicular phase, many women experience increased mental clarity, creativity, and a heightened sense of well-being.
Conversely, progesterone, which dominates the luteal phase, has a calming effect on the nervous system and can promote feelings of relaxation and contentment. However, if these hormones are out of balance due to stress, hormone irregularities, obesity, poor diet we may not feel the benefits of these amazing hormones at work.
By becoming attuned to the fluctuations of our hormones, we can anticipate and better understand these changes, empowering us to make informed choices to support our well-being throughout the month. Whether it's adjusting our exercise routine, prioritizing self-care, or modifying our diet, recognizing the influence of hormones empowers us to proactively manage our health.
Instead of viewing our cycles as a burden, we can reframe them as a source of insight and empowerment. By learning to listen to our bodies and honor the natural rhythms of our cycles, we can cultivate a greater sense of well-being and self empowerment in our lives.
