How Your Home Impacts Your Mind: Design, Light, & the Nervous System with Geri Del Vento

We first met Geri Del Vento when we were hunting for a space to record this very podcast, and hers was so beautifully designed we couldn't stop talking about it. Geri is a Venezuelan-born, Miami-raised creative whose path wound through dance, church environments, and motherhood before landing in interior design, and she brings real warmth and intention to everything she touches.

We get into something I care about deeply: the connection between your environment and how you feel. Geri explains why design is more than aesthetics, it's intentionality, and how the spaces we live in speak directly to our nervous system, our sense of calm, and even our sleep.

We dig into lighting, talk about color, and why the goal is never to chase a trend but to find what genuinely brings you peace. We get into texture and we talk about which rooms matter most, why the kitchen and family room might be your true sanctuary, and how to treat the bedroom as a place of rest.

Whether you want to refresh one room on a budget or rethink how your whole home makes you feel, this one will change how you see the space around you.

FAQs

Can my home really affect how I feel?

Yes. Your environment is in constant conversation with your nervous system through signals like light, texture, color, and order. A calm, well-designed space can help your body settle, while a harsh or cluttered one can keep it subtly on guard. Designing your space intentionally is a genuine way to support how you feel day to day.

What's the difference between decorating and designing?

Decorating arranges objects; designing starts with a question, what do you want the space to do, and how do you want to feel in it? Knowing the intention first shapes every choice that follows, and it makes the space genuinely supportive rather than just attractive.

How does lighting affect my mood?

Lighting has one of the most direct effects on the body because it speaks to your circadian rhythm. Bright, cool white light signals alertness and can feel sterile over time, while warmer, softer light in the evening signals the body to wind down. Warmer, dimmable light and plenty of natural daylight are among the most powerful ways to make a space feel calming.

What colors are best for a calm space?

There's no universal answer. Lighter, neutral, nature-inspired palettes promote calm for many people, but color affects everyone differently, and some feel most at ease surrounded by a color they love. The best approach is to choose what genuinely settles you rather than following a trend, often a calm base with a meaningful pop of color.

Why do certain fabrics and textures bother some people so much?

Texture registers physically, and some people are especially sensitive to it, a real and common trait, not fussiness. The feel of sheets, blankets, and furniture can either soothe or subtly agitate the nervous system. Choosing breathable, comfortable materials your body settles into is a simple way to make a space feel safe.

If I can only afford to redo one room, which should it be?

For most families, the room where you spend the most time together, typically the kitchen and connected living area, offers the most benefit, since it's where connection happens. The bedroom is a strong second, because it's your space for rest and sleep. And you don't need a renovation; a fresh coat of paint and a few thoughtful changes can transform a room affordably.
